What are nano-materials?

As nano-materials are defined those containing particles with one or more external dimensions of 1 to 100 nm. Having a diameter of 10,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, nano-materials are comparable in size to the atoms and molecules and due to their particular characteristics, e.g. shape and size, they have different properties than the corresponding materials on a larger scale. Thanks to those differences, these materials open new perspectives in areas, such as environmental applications, waterproofing, degradation of liquid and gaseous pollutants, anti-microbial action etc.
